The German Shepherd Dog Club of Pakistan
was formed in 1980 after more than five decades of breeding
GSDs under the auspices of firstly the Kennel Club of India,
then, after partition, the Kennel Club of Pakistan. In the
process it has been established without doubt that the German
Shepherd Dog is the most popular breed on the sub-continent
as it is in the rest of the world.
The GSD Club of Pakistan has as its prime objective the breeding,
keeping and training of the German Shepherd Dog along the
lines of the ideals and standards specified by the Welt Union
für Deutsche Schäferhunde Vereine (WUSV), which
came into being as an extension of the European Union in 1976.
The GSDCP joined this prestigious summit organization as full-fledged
member in 1981 and has played a significant role in its evolution
over 25 years.
Since the GSDCP's formation rapid strides have been made by
the GSD in Pakistan and the age old maladies of fine boned,
short-haired animals without undercoats or long-coated ones,
snipey heads, bad temperaments, faulty structural construction
and poor movement which dominated the scene, disappeared rapidly.
Today, we are producing dogs of a very good type and construction
that can do justice to the breed both here and internationally.
A planned and far-sighted breeding program incorporating the
best bloodlines available in the world has facilitated this
leap forward. Vastly improved standards of rearing, handling
and keeping of these dogs have played an enormous role in
this development.
The Club organizes dog shows, with great success. These have
been judged by famous German and other International Judges,
including the former WUSV and SV President the late Herr Hermann
Martin, former SV Bundeszuchtwart Herr Dr. Beck, COAPA President
Sig. Julio Brisola, SVO President and WUSV EC member Dr. Wolfgang
Tauber, Koermeisters Hans-Peter Rieker, Klaus Gothe, Hans-Peter
Schweimer, Günter Bauer, Margit van Dorssen and many
other renowned judges. In addition, the Club organizes seminars
and Breeders' Conferences annually as well as implementing
the Breed Survey Program from the year 1999-2000.
Pakistani owned and bred dogs have competed at the highest
forums for the GSD in the world including the World Championship
(Bundesiegerzuchtschau) and Crufts with much success, annexing
the World Championship four times and the Supreme Championship
at Crufts on two occasions. The last major GSD victory was
the highest grading of VA at Karlsruhe in 2004 at the World
Championship Show to Aike zum Gigesfelsen.
The future progress of the GSD in Pakistan is dependent on
intensive hard work and application of the knowledge and experience
we are continuing to gain first hand through our association
at the highest level with the WUSV. The Hip-Dysplasia program,
DNA, other genetic scientific development exercises as well
as schutzhund training will be implemented as per the resolution
passed in the General Assembly of the WUSV. The conference
decided unanimously that no dog or bitch will be graded VA
overseas unless it has a training title, passes the courage
test and has “a” stamp and DNA. The GSDCP will begin implementation
at the earliest in order to meet with these requirements.
This will further assist in producing GSDs that can compete
at the international level.
At the same time, the working side of the breed will be developed
aggressively to enable us to extract the maximum from this
wonderful breed and guide those amongst us who are primarily
interested in the working and utility side. One must consider
the assistance we could have received during this disastrous
earthquake if we had dog teams for rescue working in large
numbers. In any case, the demand in so many different spheres
in the present scenario requires that we rise to the occasion
and cater to it.
The market is now flooded with complete dog foods and these
are essential for the correct growth and development of a
young animal. Already the pups being born now are showing
the huge difference when fed with the correct food as opposed
to those still fed in the conventional manner. It is important
in deciding which food to feed that the components are studied
carefully and the selection made on the basis of the individual
dogs requirements.
Veterinary and other services important to the breed are at
the foremost of the GSDCP's mind and it is actively promoting
veterinary sciences and veterinary medicine in order to ensure
that our animals receive the best medical attention and treatment,
valuable as they are.
There exists a perfect working relationship between the GSDCP
and the Kennel Club of Pakistan, which is the canine control
authority in the country. On behalf of the KCP, the GSDCP
registers German Shepherd Dogs and all events are organised
under KCP rules and regulations and with its approval. Only
judges approved by the KCP are appointed to officiate at the
shows held by the Club and the championship point systems
are as per the KCP rules and regulations.
